Final: Fabrication

Research:
It will take 3 days for my design to be 3d printed and delivered from makexyz, and cost approximately $12 if I were to have it printed out of plastic. I chose makexyz because of its free, fast shipping and its relatively cheap prices.

Conclusion:
1). When I see something that comes from a machine, I automatically assume it's perfect. Man-made things, on the other hand, are prone to mistakes/human error.
2). Working drawings are definitely necessary in order to communicate the design of a consumer product. Without a sketch, it's a lot more difficult to picture the design, as the way we picture the design in our minds may be completely different from someone else's. Without a picture, if it's not perfectly communicated and explained, then the design is ruined.
3). 3D animated models can more accurately convey the finer details of a design that a still picture wouldn't be able to do. Beyond the design process, they can be used as a visual aid for pitching/engineering/etc.

Maker Faire Reflection Post

1). Maker Faire was just as I had imagined, a unique, exciting event that i'd have lots of fun at. Our showcase was similar to what I had envisioned it to be- a table full of laptops ready to play Adrastus. The fact that people actually came and checked out the game was a major success. I don't think I would do anything different!

2). I didn't find any other showcases to be particularly inspiring, though I was fascinated with the tesla coil music booth.

3). One thing I distinctly noticed was that no one would be willing to pay for the game.

4). I would definitely like to see more of the narrative incorporated into the story, from the brief glimpses of the game that I saw, I didn't see too much of that. Graphics too, the AI guards need to look like actual humans, not red humanoid monsters. Also, maybe tone down the difficulty and or incorporate guides/hints into the gameplay. Having tried the game a few times, its almost impossible to win. Also adjust the colosseum colors to something more realistic.

Maker Faire Showcase Design

Displaying IMG_2820.JPG
Gallery Design

  1. For my showcase design, I envisioned us having a single, narrow table where we can set up two laptops with the game installed, along with the tri-fold Sasha and Diana were working on. If we have any additional space, we could add surveys  between the computers along with a banner along the side of the table for decoration.
  2. In the beginning I primarily worked on the narrative team and helped make most of the script.Once the script was finished, however, I took the time to design a t-shirt that we could all wear during Maker Faire.
  3. Overall I think we succeeded in our goals, we showed a surprising amount of teamwork and cooperation throughout this project.
  4. I wish we had gone with a different, more easier concept, instead of a first person perspective game (*cough* visual novel *cough*)
  5. I think my greatest achievements were the script and the t-shirt design. I did the best that I could do with the script given the concept, and i'm overall very pleased with how the t-shirts look.

Maker Faire Reflection

This week I primarily went over the critiques and suggestions for the script and finished up editing, completing the final draft of the script. After that, I began shadowing people from the engineering team and assisted when necessary with the narrative transition.

Maker Faire Roles

I would like to apply for a narrative position in the Maker Faire game design team. I feel I am best suited towards this role because I genuinely enjoy writing and, I have been told by my peers that I write well. I have a lot of experience from writing from over the years, and understand how write dialogue, design characters, plot, and etc.

Dimensioning Standards

1). Size dimensions describe the size of each geometric feature, while location dimensions show the location of each geometric feature within an object or view
2). Datum dimensions are where a single reference point is used for all dimensions in a single direction, while chain dimensions are where each point is measured to the next. Datum dimensions result in smaller dimensional deviation in manufactured parts.
3) With a dimension drawing, you can visually convey it, while through a written description you can verbally covey it. A dimension drawing is usually more accurate.

Reflection Interview #2

The interview with Jessica Pauley was very informative and helpful. SpaceX seems like a really interesting place to work, especially when they're doing so many cool projects. It does seem like a lot of hard work and long hours, but given what they're doing, that's expected. Overall, I can agree with the fact that if SpaceX were to be any ice cream flavor, it would be pistachio, though i'm not sure why it would be considered frozen yogurt.

Maker Faire Game Research

Fire Emblem Awakening box art.png

Fire Emblem Awakening is a turn based tactical role playing game where you play as the head Tactician of Prince Chrom's army, and must lead them to victory. The game was first announced at a Nintendo's 3DS press conference during the 2011 Tokyo Game Show. A free demo was released to the 3DS eShop on January and March for North America and Europe respectively. It developed by Intelligent Systems, and due to the series declining sales, was meant to be the last game in the series if it didn't sell at least 250,000 copies. In the end, it exceeded sale expectations and sold 242,600 copies in the first week alone. This game is intriguing to me, due to having personally played the game, along with having;
  • challenging gameplay
  • an array of customization features
  • a unique cast of characters
  • a compelling storyline
  • an amazing soundtrack

Reverse Engineering

1). Visual design principles and elements impact the commercial appeal by appealing to the aesthetics of the targeted consumer, thereby attracting their attention.

2). The black box represents the product function in the system input/output model.

3). Engineers reverse engineer products in order to better understand how the product was made, its flaws, and how it can be better improved on.

4). If given the opportunity, I would change the wood used. Rather than German beech wood, I would use Oak instead, as Oak is cheaper and generally sturdier.

CAD Automoblox

This was the progress I was able to make on the CAD model of the Automoblox. I managed to make some of the passenger base, though I was struggling with the triangle and hadn't even attempted making the star. Filleting the edges came easily, as that was my question in the Teach What You Know blog post. However, determining the dimensions of the shapes locations was difficult, and I primarily struggled with that. I'm still unsure as to how to dimension the triangle into its exact location, along with how to make a star shape.

Geometric Constraints Reflection

Displaying IMG_2589.JPG
1). We used triangles, since those were the most stable, and a hexagon base, which would be strong and large.
2). Acute/obtuse angles resulted from the triangles formed.
3). Excluding the base, the overall SA of the exterior would be 28.25 inches. I would use 28.25 inches of wood as my material.
4). The overall SA of the interior would be 44.49 inches. If each person were the size of a gumdrop, then approximately 30 people could fit inside the shelter.
5). We were only given 30 toothpicks and 12 gum drops, so we had to make our shelter smaller.
6). We designed the shelter to be very secure, and as such the design turned out incredibly stable.

Inventor Question

My question regarding inventor: how do you fillet your design?

I used this page and this video. After reading through the page and watching the video, I realized filleting was easy. All you had to do was click on the Fillet icon on the top side bar and input your measurements, and voila, your design can be easily fillet-ed.

Form Follows Function

Snuggies. Warm, comfy, and in a variety of colors, Snuggies seem to be perfect. However, don't be fooled. The Snuggie is a lie. With their deceptive advertisements, your $14.99 is wasted on a junk piece of cloth with no back.

...Which is why I've decided to redesign the Snuggie, with a back.

Because I was absent on Wednesday, I was unable to design CAD parts. However, given that I was redesigning a Snuggie, I doubt I would've been able to do so otherwise.
1). The Snuggie 360 is intended for all a variety of shapes and sizes with an colors to pick and choose from.
2). It would be made just like actual snuggies, except the cloth would be stitched together at the back, along with pockets and hoods.
3). It meets the project criteria due, since the Snuggie has a major flaw in its design, and the Snuggie 360 works to fix this.

4). The Snuggie 360 is literally the Snuggie, just with minor adjustments.
5). It is similar to the Snuggie in general design, however the hood, pockets, and closed back make it unique.
6). It could be better by using better, softer material, rather than just cotton.

Puzzle Cube Reflection

Displaying image.jpg
Assembled Puzzle Cube

Here's my final completed puzzle cube.
Mean: 88.2
Median: 85
Mode: None
Standard Deviation: 67.79897

Overall my puzzle cube was relatively easy to solve, as many were able to finish it within minutes. Even though it wasn't particularly challenging, it apparently "Makes people feel good about themselves" when solved.

Graph
It's important to model an idea before making a final prototype because without a model, you are unable to clearly see the final prototype and any adjustments it may or may not need. What I like about my puzzle is that all the pieces fit together well, and there are no pieces that are hard or impossible to fit together. One thing I would change if I could would be making my puzzle cube more challenging and not have it so easily solvable.

After careful consideration, I decided on Design 2. I picked this due to it being more challenging, as when I had my partner test out the two designs, Design 2 took a considerably large amount of time to assemble and was overall more difficult.

Cube Quality Control

Mean: 0.751, Median: 0.75, Mode: 0.751, Standard deviation: 0.00988
The data appears to be distributed normally, judging from the relative evenness of the graph and the closeness of the mean, median, and mode. Also, the standard deviation is a low number, meaning that the extent of deviation of the group as a whole is very little.
